The village is located on the left slope of the Leventina Valley at 965 m above sea level. M. on a sunny terrace one and a half kilometers away to the Lavorgo station of the Gotthard Railway and on the Strada Alta . Outside the village on a rocky promontory stands the parish church of San Martino. Because of this location, it dominates the entire Middle Leventina, from the terrace with Chironico up to Faido. The old mill of Calonico has been renovated and can be visited.

Calonico can be reached from Lavorgo by a five-kilometer mountain road that branches off from main road 2 . Together with Anzonico , Cavagnago and Sobrio , Calonico forms the so-called Traversa .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1227 as Callonego ; it was, probably together with Lavorgo, one of the five Degagne of the Chiggiogna neighborhood and belonged to the Chiggiogna parish, from which it split off in 1602. The parish church of San Martino, documented since 1300, was built away from the village in a picturesque location on a rocky promontory dominating the middle Leventina. In 1834 the village suffered from the storm of August 27th.

Merger with Faido

In a referendum in March 2004, the citizens of the small municipality of Calonico rejected the merger with Faido, Osco , Mairengo , Calpiogna , Campello , Rossura , Anzonico, Chiggiogna, Cavagnago and Sobrio. Despite the negative referendum, the local government decided in spring 2005 to join the new Faido community. On June 5, 2005, the new merger bill was passed in a referendum.

The municipality of Calonico had 57 inhabitants on December 31, 2005 and was financially dependent on the canton.
