Parish until the merger on April 1, 2012

Until March 31, 2012, Cavagnago was a municipality in the Giornico district , in the Leventina district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The village lies on a terrace on the left slope of the Valle Leventina on the Strada Alta . Together with Anzonico, Calonico and Sobrio, Cavagnago forms the so-called Traversa .

history

The village is first mentioned in 1270 under the then name Cavagnago . In the Middle Ages Cavagnago belonged civilly and politically to the vicinia and parish of Giornico . It separated from it in 1585 and became an independent parish with Sobrio , who in turn separated from him in 1611.

Community merger

On April 1, 2012, it merged with the municipalities of Anzonico , Calpiogna , Campello , Chironico , Mairengo and Osco to form the existing municipality of Faido and thus transferred to the Faido district . In a referendum in March 2004, the citizens of Cavagnago accepted the merger of their municipality with Faido, Osco, Mairengo, Calpiogna, Campello, Rossura , Anzonico, Chiggiogna , Calonico and Sobrio . Despite the positive decision, Cavagnago could not be considered because all the surrounding communities rejected the merger.

The small number of inhabitants and the precarious financial situation led the canton of Ticino to appoint a municipal administrator for Cavagnago in November 2005. From then on, until the merger, the municipality no longer had an executive.
