geography

Aerial photo (1954)

The village lies at an altitude of 909 m above sea level. M. in the middle of lush meadows and pastures; at the southern foot of Pizzo d'Era (2618 m above sea level) and 1.7 km northwest of the Faido station of the Swiss Federal Railways .

history

The village is mentioned for the first time in 1201 under the then name Mairencho . In the Middle Ages it belonged to Degagna Tarnolgio, which in turn was subordinate to the Vicinia (neighborhood) Faido and whose annual meetings took place alternately twice in Mairengo and once in Faido. At the time of the governors, the village shared the fate of the Leventina .

In 1827, emigrants from Mairengo in New York founded Delmonico's Restaurant , one of the first restaurants in the USA.

Merger with Faido

On April 1, 2012, it merged with the municipalities of Anzonico , Calpiogna , Campello , Cavagnago , Chironico and Osco to form the existing municipality of Faido.

The village of Mairengo is located on a sunny terrace on the left slope of the Leventina Valley at 920 meters. In a referendum in March 2004, the citizens of Mairengo rejected the merger of their municipality with Faido, Osco, Cavagnago, Calpiogna, Campello, Rossura , Anzonico, Chiggiogna , Calonico and Sobrio .

Mairengo includes Tortengo and Polmengo , as well as the Maiensäss Tarnolgio . In Polmengo, during the construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, there was a large construction site for the Faido intermediate attack.
