Carlo Jagmetti

Carlo Siro Franco Jagmetti (born July 14, 1932 in Zurich ) is a Swiss lawyer and former diplomat .

Career

Carlo Jagmetti attended primary school and the literary high school in Zurich. After studying law in Zurich, Geneva and Paris, he received his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1958 . During his student days he joined the Swiss Zofingerverein . In 1961 he obtained the Zurich lawyer patent. Jagmetti did military service in the mountain infantry in Ticino and Obwalden as well as in the staffs of Geb Div 9 and Geb AK 3. He is a lieutenant colonel in the retired General Staff.

Jagmetti began his career in the diplomatic service in 1962. In 1963 he was at the embassy in Rome, 1964–1969 at the Political Directorate in Bern, from 1969 to 1973 at the embassy in London. 1972 Representation as chargé d'affaires in Saigon . Shortly after joining what was then the Federal Political Department, he was already dealing with problems such as the Biafra war and the compensation negotiations with Cuba .

He worked in a leading role in relations between Switzerland and Europe: first as deputy head and then as head of the Swiss delegation at EFTA and GATT in Geneva (1973–1980), most recently at ECE / UNO and UNCTAD , but above all as head of the Swiss mission to the European Community in Brussels (1982–1987). He was the Swiss Ambassador to South Korea (1980–1982), France (1987–1993) and most recently to the United States (1993–1997).

Ambassador to the USA

While working as an ambassador in the USA, he got caught up in the conflict over dormant assets , which put a strain on relations between Switzerland and the USA. The publication of a confidential management report from his pen in the SonntagsZeitung led to Jagmetti's resignation under dramatic circumstances in 1997.

He was in the Swiss diplomatic service for 35 years.

Personal

Since his resignation in 1997 he has been active as a journalist. Jagmetti is married and has two children. He is the brother of Riccardo Jagmetti .
