Delmonico's Restaurant is considered one of the first restaurants in the USA.

On December 13, 1827, it was opened as a café in New York by the brothers Giovanni ("John") and Pietro ("Peter") Delmonico, who had immigrated from the Swiss town of Mairengo .

The numerous famous guests included Mark Twain , who celebrated his birthday at Delmonico's, Charles Dickens , Oscar Wilde , Walter Scott , Queen Victoria , Edward VII and Napoleon III.

Allegedly, numerous dishes that are still known today were created at Delmonico's, for example Eggs Benedict , Chicken à la King, Lobster Newberg and Delmonico Potatoes.

From 1919 Edward LC Robins took over Delmonico's from the owner family. In 1923 the restaurant closed due to prohibition .

Chefs

  • In 1837, John Lux took over the post of head chef . Lux managed to make Delmonico's an outstanding restaurant.
  • In 1862 the then famous chef Charles Ranhofer was hired as chef.
  • In 1866, Alessandro Filippini from Ticino joined the Delmonicos and stayed there in various roles, including a. as restaurant manager and head chef until 1891. Filippini was the first to systematically collect and publish Delmonico's recipes (The Delmonico Cook-Book, 1889).
