Until March 31, 2012, Chironico was a political municipality in the Faido district in the Leventina district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . The village itself consists of numerous wooden houses (log buildings) that are typical of the Leventina

Community merger

On April 1, 2012, Chironico merged with the municipalities of Anzonico , Calpiogna , Campello , Cavagnago , Mairengo and Osco to form the existing municipality of Faido .

geography

Aerial photo (1964)

The village is 799 m above sea level. M. at the exit of the Ticinetto (a right-hand tributary to the Ticino (river) ) drained valley of the same name and three kilometers south of the Lavorgo station of the Gotthard Railway . The road to Chironico leaves the bottom of the valley at Lavorgo and leads through chestnut forests up the mountain to the village. Chironico is located on a terrace at the entrance of the Val Chironico, a right side valley of the Valle Leventina . The municipality includes the hamlets of Grumo not far south of Chironico and Nivo on the Ticino river opposite Lavorgo.

The terrace on which Chironico is located was built in prehistoric times as a result of a huge landslide on the opposite side of the valley. This detached itself from the left slope of the Leventina at the point where Anzonico is today, and blocked the Ticino River , which had to find a new path and in this way formed the Biaschina Gorge .

The uninhabited and partly overgrown Val Chironico is traversed by the Ticinetto river. The hamlets of Osadigo (consisting of Mun , Löita and Garnei ), Cala , Doro , Ces , Frecc, Gramonenc and Olina are located on its slopes .

Only Osadigo is inhabited and farmed by a goat farmer all year round. The rest is used in the summer months by the descendants of former residents as a weekend and summer stay.

Gribbio, the last hamlet that belongs to Chironicos Maiensässen, is located in another small side valley of the Leventina Valley. In contrast to Osadigo, Cala, Doro, Olina and Ces, Gribbio can be reached by road from Chironico or Dalpe , which did not prevent it from being abandoned.

There are numerous efforts to preserve the former cultivated land and the terraces through sustainable use, or to partially revive them.

Between Doro and Ces lies the Varenc moorland , which is included in the list of moorland areas of national importance.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1202 as vicinia Cuirono . Chironico appears as vicinia as early as 1227; it was divided into different decanie : it formed an independent rodaria and had the right to send 10 men to the general council of the valley. In 1800 Chironico still belonged to the faccia dì mezzo with Chiggiogna and Faido . The nobles of Locarno had basic rights there, which they sold at the beginning of the 13th century. The Lords of Giornico were still partially in their possession in 1309. In 1405 the basilicano (basalganum) of Chironico was assigned to gastaldia Claro .

Due to its location on the historic Gotthardweg (the Biaschina Gorge was not accessible in historical times), Chironico gained a certain importance.
