Ex Aquila municipality

Blenio is the name of a created in the fall of 2006, the political community in the Swiss canton of Ticino ( District Blenio , county Olivone ). It consists of the territory of the former municipalities of Aquila , Campo (Blenio) , Ghirone , Olivone and Torre .

geography

The municipality covers the entire upper Blenio valley . The main valley, which starts at the Greina Pass as Val Camadra and flows through from the Brenno in a north-south direction, flows into the Val di Campo at Campo and the Valle Santa Maria in the Olivone basin , which provides access to the Lukmanier Pass .

Neighboring communities are Acquarossa , Serravalle , Faido and Quinto in the canton of Ticino and Medel (Lucmagn) , Lumnezia , Vals and Rheinwald in the canton of Graubünden .

history

Objects from the Neolithic Age and in 1852 more than 5000 Roman coins with portraits from Aurelian to Constantine the Great were found in the Blenio Valley . The valley is believed to have been inhabited by the Celts and the Raiders . In a will of 948, Bishop Atto von Vercelli bequeathed the three Ambrosian valleys belonging to his own property ( Allod ) to the Milan cathedral chapter and thus laid the foundation for the spiritual and secular rule of the canons over the Leventina , Blenio and Riviera valleys . From 1440/1441 to 1789 the village of Prugiasco belonged politically to the Leventina .

The confederates first took possession of the valley in 1479, again in 1495 and finally on May 28, 1496; the following day the population took the oath of allegiance. Blenio was jointly administered by Uri , Schwyz and Obwalden ; In 1501, the first bailiff was installed in Lottigna. Under the federal rule, the assembly of the valley authority appointed the governor of the bailiff, the militia captain, the panner lord, the treasurer, the chancellor and the council.

The merger of the five highest municipalities of the Blenio district to form the new municipality of Blenio, decided by the Ticino cantonal parliament on January 25, 2005, was originally supposed to take place in spring 2006, but an objection by the municipality of Aquila led to a delay. After the Federal Supreme Court rejected the lawsuit on April 18, 2006, the way to the merger was free, which became final on October 22, 2006. In Olivone, the largest parliamentary group, central facilities such as the community chancellery and school were concentrated; The site of the building administration is Aquila.

Critics complained that it led to misunderstandings to call the new municipality the name of the valley, although it only includes the uppermost section. Therefore, the local council set up two commissions on December 22, 2006, which should deal with a possible renaming. At the end of August 2007, the decision was made to keep the name Blenio.

In a referendum on November 27, 2016, the majority of the population of the municipality of Blenio voted against the establishment of the Parc Adula National Park .
