About this picture
w

Serravalle is a municipality in the Malvaglia district in the Blenio district of the Swiss canton of Ticino . It was created on April 1st, 2012 through the merger of the three former municipalities Ludiano , Malvaglia and Semione .

geography

The municipality of Serravalle comprises a section of the lower Blenio valley on both sides of the Brenno and the entire side valley of Val Mavaglia through which the Orino flows. The three villages Ludiano, Malvaglia and Semione are all in the here relatively wide Blenio Valley. The Val Mavaglia, on the other hand, is no longer inhabited all year round. In addition to several Alpine settlements, the Lago di Malvaglia reservoir is also located here . The community reaches a height of 3347  m above sea level on the southern ridge of the Rheinwaldhorn . M. Other higher peaks that rise over the Val Malvaglia are, among others, the Cima di Gana Bianca , the Cima Rossa , the Logia , the Piz di Strega and the Vogelsberg .

The neighboring communities are Acquarossa , Blenio , Biasca , Bodio , Giornico and Pollegio as well as Rossa , Mesocco and Rheinwald on Graubünden territory .

history

The new municipality was created through the merger of Ludiano , Malvaglia and Semione based on a resolution of the Ticino Grand Council on March 15, 2011. In a consultative vote on April 25, 2010, 75% of the voters of the three municipalities had previously voted in favor of the merger: In Malvaglia, approval was very clear with 84%, and support was also clear with 67% in Ludiano, whereas the residents of Semione, with a majority of 54%, narrowly agreed to the municipal merger. The name of the new municipality, which means "dam", is borrowed from the name of the castle of the same name in the municipality .

In a referendum on November 27, 2016, the majority of the population of Serravalle voted against the establishment of the Parc Adula National Park .

Schools and Infrastructure

The kindergarten and primary school are located in the Serravalle municipality, while middle school classes take place in the neighboring municipality of Acquarossa . The grammar school classes take place at the Liceo Cantonale di Bellinzona or at the Scuola Cantonale di Commercio Bellinzona .

The municipality has soccer fields in Semione and Malvaglia.

economy

In 2018, the primary sector (energy production, quarrying, agriculture and forestry) had 51 companies, which corresponds to 28.7% of the local companies. 36 companies (20.2%) belong to the secondary sector (industry and trade). 91 companies (51.1%) in the tertiary sector (trade and services). The total of 178 local businesses employ 589 people, 389 of whom are men and 200 women. With a share of 90.4%, companies with no more than 4 employees predominate. Various farmers and small businesses are trying to position Serravalle as a production location for high-quality and sustainably produced food, in line with the slow food movement that started in Italy .

The majority of the employees in Serravalle are commuters who work mainly in Biasca , the Riviera , or Bellinzona . In addition to the municipal administration, mainly the quarry, two construction companies and several ancillary construction companies offer employment. There are also several shops and restaurants, as well as a bank and a post office. Tourism in the Blenio Valley has traditionally been poorly developed. The municipality of Serravalle therefore does not keep statistics on overnight stays. Private homeowners rent out rooms and holiday homes. Serravalle is hoping for economic impetus from a new thermal bath project ( Acquarossa Spa Resort ) in neighboring Acquarossa.
