Campo (Blenio) is a village and formerly an independent political municipality in the Olivone district , in the Blenio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The former municipal area largely coincides with the Val di Campo , a right side valley of the upper Blenio valley . The small clustered village of Campo is located directly at the confluence with the main valley on the river Fiume d'Orsàira , in the valley there are the hamlets of Pianchera, Calcarida and Orsàira. The peaks of Pizzo del Corvo ( 3,015  m above sea level ) and Cima della Bianca ( 2,893  m above sea level ) rise at the end of the valley ; Over the Passo Cristallina ( 2398  m above sea level ) - past Lago Retico ( 2372  m above sea level ) - a mule path leads to the Lukmanier route in the Bündner Oberland.

Neighboring communities were Ghirone and Olivone in the canton of Ticino and Medel (Lucmagn) in the canton of Graubünden .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1205 under the then name Campo . Already in the 12th century the village belonged to the general Vicinia of Olivone, Campo and Largario . Today this vicinanza still exists, the desire for separation has so far been unsuccessful. The church of St. Agathe is mentioned in 1225.

The opening of the new road with the Toira tunnel in 1958 (originally built for the construction of the Luzzone dam) and the opening of a ski lift in 1964 encouraged summer and winter tourism.

Community merger

The merger of the five municipalities in the upper section of the valley, which was decided by the cantonal parliament on January 25, 2005 and originally planned for spring 2006, was delayed by a complaint from the municipality of Aquila. After the Federal Supreme Court dismissed the appeal in April 2006, the way to the merger was clear. On October 22, 2006, Campo Blenio was merged with Aquila , Ghirone , Olivone and Torre to form the new municipality of Blenio .
