Ghirone is a village and has been an independent political municipality in the Olivone district , in the Blenio district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland , since the split from Aquila in 1853 . In autumn 2006 the municipality was integrated into the municipality of Blenio as part of the municipality merger in the upper Blenio valley .

geography

Ghirone is the furthest settlement in the Blenio Valley . There is no village with that name. The former municipality comprised the hamlets of Aquilesco , Baselga and Cozzera, scattered in the Val Camadra to the left of the Brenno river . Until the 19th century, Buttino, on the other side of the valley, was inhabited all year round. The highest point of the territory is the Piz Medel ( 3210  m above sea level ).

In a clockwise direction from the east, neighboring communities were Aquila, Olivone and Campo (Blenio) in the canton of Ticino, as well as Medel (Lucmagn) and Vrin in the canton of Graubünden .

history

The village is first mentioned in 1200 as Agairono . The village belonged to the Vicinìa Aquila TI ; In 1803 there was a merger with the community of the same name, in 1836 Ghirone separated from Aquila and founded their own community with Buttino. Buttino is documented as an autonomous body as early as the 13th century and was inhabited until the end of the 19th century. The two communities merged with Aquila a second time in 1842 and 1846 and finally separated in 1853. The civil parish (patriziato) Ghirone-Buttino was founded in 1914.

Community merger

The merger of the five municipalities in the upper section of the valley, which was decided by the cantonal parliament on January 25, 2005 and originally planned for spring 2006, was delayed by a complaint from the municipality of Aquila. After the Federal Supreme Court dismissed the appeal in April 2006, the way to the merger was clear. On October 22nd, 2006 Ghirone was merged with Aquila , Campo (Blenio) , Olivone and Torre to form the new municipality of Blenio .
