geography

The Riviera is traversed by the Ticino River. The area shows almost exclusively the flora of the south. The region of the Riviera is not precisely defined, but in addition to the political district of Riviera with the municipalities of Biasca and Riviera TI, it also includes areas of the Bellinzona district such as the villages of Claro TI , which belonged to the Riviera district until 2017, as well as Moleno , Preonzo and Gnosca in the lower part of the valley.

At the time of the Old Confederation , the area was called Reffier in German .

The valley is characterized by the transalpine transport connections, the Gotthard Railway and the Autobahn 2 . In contrast to many other regions of Ticino, the steep mountain slopes are unpopulated. The CIma di Bri ( 2520  m above sea level ) and the Poncione Rosso ( 2506  m above sea level ) rise in the west, the Torrent Alto ( 2952  m above sea level ) and the Pizzo di Claro ( 2727  m above sea level ) in the east above sea level ). The valley floor is approximately 250- 300  m above sea level. M.

Upstream in the north are the Leventina and the Valle di Blenio , further to the south the mountains open to Bellinzona and the Magadino plain . In the east of the Riviera lies the Calanca valley , in the west the Verzasca valley .

history

In a will of 948, Bishop Atto von Vercelli bequeathed the three Ambrosian valleys belonging to his own property ( Allod ) to the Milan Cathedral Chapter and thus laid the foundation for the spiritual and secular rule of the canons over the Leventina , Blenio and Riviera.
