The village was first mentioned as Prevonzo in 1335 . The place name probably comes from the Latin profundus 'deep' and thus refers to a neighboring deep point or a neighboring eddy or whirlpool of the Ticino river.

In the 14th century it formed a neighborhood (vicinia) with Moleno . In 1335 it was one of the municipalities of the County of Bellinzona. The Bishop of Como had basic rights in Preonzo, which he ceded in 1181 to the Orelli, then Capitanei of Locarno . In 1419 they belonged to the Orelli of Claro .

On April 2, 2017, Preonzo joined the municipality of Bellinzona at the same time as the municipalities of Camorino , Claro , Giubiasco , Gnosca , Gorduno , Gudo , Moleno, Monte Carasso, Pianezzo , Sant'Antonio and Sementina .
