Gnosca [ ˈɲɔska ] ( Lombard Gnuscu [ˈɲuʃku ˈɲoʃko] ) is a district of the municipality of Bellinzona in the Swiss canton of Ticino . By April 1, 2017, it formed an independent political municipality that belonged to the then Ticino district .
geography
The village is located on the right bank of the Ticino River at the entrance to the Riviera , opposite Claro , in the north of the municipality of Bellinzona.
history
The village is first attested to in 1198 as Niosca . The linguistic meaning of the place name is unclear.
From prehistoric time, little is known; In 1898 bronze objects from the Etruscan era were discovered .
In the Middle Ages Gnosca belonged to the Gastalde Claro. Milan and the Diocese of Como simultaneously raised claims to Gnosca, and in 1335 the place is also mentioned as being under the rule of Bellinzona.
On April 2, 2017, Gnosca joined the municipality of Bellinzona at the same time as the municipalities of Camorino , Claro , Giubiasco , Gorduno , Gudo , Moleno , Monte Carasso , Pianezzo , Preonzo , Sant'Antonio and Sementina .

Personalities
- The da Gnosca family, descended from the Locarno noble family Magoria and, like them, belonged to the nobility association of the Capitanei. She resided in the Gnosca Castle, which gave her its name, from the 13th century.
- Ubertino da Gnosca (* around 1340; † before 1407 in Gnosca?), Mentioned from 1362 in Claro; In 1374 the canons of the Milan Cathedral Chapter granted him undivided jurisdiction in the area of Gnosca and Gorduno for one year .
