The Gastalde (from the Mittellat. Gastaldus , bestallter, placed, carer) was the steward in the Lombard Empire, who was entrusted with the administration of the crown property , later a royal official who could be compared with a bailiff of lower jurisdiction . His office was named Gastaldia .

In Franconian times, the legal title and the person of the count pushed him out of his position. In Venice , the head of the respective guild was called Gastalden .
