Gorduno ( Lombard Gurdügn [gurˈdyŋ] ) is a district of the municipality of Bellinzona in the Swiss canton of Ticino . Until April 1, 2017, it formed an independent political municipality .

geography

The village is located on the right bank of the Ticino River and 2 km north of the center of Bellinzona.

history

The name was first documented in 1182 as de Gurduno . Its linguistic significance is unclear.

The area was already populated in prehistoric times. Roman graves were discovered in 1924 .

In the Middle Ages, the village is first attested in 1182 as medius locus de Gorduno , in connection with a dispute between Como and the Church of Milan . The barons of Sax built a castle in Gorduno that was supposed to secure their conquests in the Bellinzona area. Gorduno has been a parish independent of Bellinzona since 1583.

On April 2, 2017, Gorduno joined the municipality of Bellinzona at the same time as the municipalities of Camorino , Claro , Giubiasco , Gnosca , Gudo , Moleno , Monte Carasso , Pianezzo , Preonzo , Sant'Antonio and Sementina .
