Gudo ( Lombard Güd [gyd] ) is a district of the municipality of Bellinzona in the Swiss canton of Ticino . By April 1, 2017, it formed an independent political municipality that belonged to the then Ticino district .

geography

Gudo lies at the foot of the mountain on the right side of the Magadino plain . The Ticino River flows through its former municipality .

history

Findings suggest that the area may have been inhabited as early as the early and later Bronze Age (17th – 12th centuries BC). A necropolis with over 300 graves dates mostly from the Iron Age .

The village is first attested to in 1264. At that time, the Johanniter von Contone , the cafeteria of the Bishop of Como , the chapters Bellinzona and Locarno and the Locarno noble families Muralto and Magoria in Gudo had manorial rights. In 1992 excavations in the parish church of San Lorenzo discovered a cult area that dates back to the 6th to 7th centuries. The current church dates from 1615.

On April 2, 2017, Gudo joined the municipality of Bellinzona at the same time as the municipalities of Camorino , Claro , Giubiasco, Gnosca , Gorduno , Moleno , Monte Carasso , Pianezzo , Preonzo , Sant'Antonio and Sementina .

  1. Lexicon of Swiss municipality names . Edited by the Center de Dialectologie at the University of Neuchâtel under the direction of Andres Kristol. Frauenfeld / Lausanne 2005, p. 418. The meaning of the place name is uncertain; perhaps the Latin acūtus is based on 'pointed' or a personal name.
