Carasso together with Galbisio a fraction of the political community Bellinzona , county Bellinzona , district of Bellinzona , in the Swiss canton of Ticino .

geography

The village is mainly located on the right bank of the Ticino River , three kilometers north of central Bellinzona. The Prato-Carasso district is on the left bank of the Ticino.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1207 as Calaxio . In 1882 a Roman altar stone consecrated to Jupiter and Mercury was discovered, and in 1968/1969 remains of Neolithic houses. A burial site from the Iron Age and late Roman graves are also known.

In 1291 Carasso formed a neighborhood (vicinia) and had a podestà in the person of Pietro Rusca. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Carasso belonged to the Rusconi family.

In 1907 the previously independent municipality of Carasso joined neighboring Bellinzona.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Sant'Andrea, built in the first middle of the 17th century, baroque-style building (restored 1983 and 2004) with various artistic works by the sculptor Ivo Soldini (altar, baptismal font); Kuhn organ from 1984 (recorded by Guy Bovet and Gaston Litaize , among others )
  • former Bonzanigo-Jauch brewery, founded in 1878, partly demolished.
  • Civic community center in Via Galbisio No. 23, built in 1968/1970 according to plans by Luigi Snozzi and Livio Vacchini .
