Gaston Litaize

Gaston Litaize (born August 11, 1909 in Ménil-sur-Belvitte ( Vosges ), † August 5, 1991 in Bruyères (Vosges)) was a French composer , organist and music teacher .

Life

Gaston Litaize, who was blind from birth , first studied at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, later at the Paris Conservatory with Marcel Dupré , Georges Caussade, Henri Busser and Maurice Emmanuel . He was also a private student of Louis Vierne . In 1938 he won the Second Great Rome Prize (Seconde Grand Prix de Rome) in composition, which was then awarded to a blind musician for the first time. In 1946 he was appointed titular organist at St. François-Xavier in Paris and professor for organ at the Institution Nationale des Jeunes Aveugles . As an organist, he undertook numerous concert tours and directed the church music broadcasts on French radio. Gaston Litaize died shortly before the age of 82 in Bruyeres (Vosges) in August 1991.
