Paul Henri Büsser (born January 16, 1872 in Toulouse , † December 30, 1973 in Paris ), the spelling of the surname also Busser , was a French composer and music teacher .

Life

Henri Büsser was a son of the Swiss singer, organist and composer, Fritz Büsser (1846–1879). He was a student of Aloys Kunc in Toulouse . In 1885 he joined the École Niedermeyer de Paris, named after Louis Niedermeyer , and studied from 1889 at the Paris Conservatory with César Franck and Charles-Marie Widor . He also received composition lessons from Ernest Guiraud , Charles Gounod and Jules Massenet . In 1893 he won the Prix ​​de Rome . After his return he was Kapellmeister at the Théâtre du Château d'eau, the Opéra-Comique and the Grand Opéra. From 1921 he led a composition class at the Conservatoire de Paris. Henri Dutilleux is considered to be his most important student .

Büsser composed several operas , a ballet , stage music, symphonic poems, concert overtures and orchestral suites , six masses , more than thirty motets , a magnificat , pieces for organ and piano , choirs and songs . His style, based on models of the 19th century such as Camille Saint-Saëns , Charles Gounod and Richard Wagner , was already considered very conservative during his lifetime.
