Barvinkove (Ukrainian Барвінкове ; Russian Барвенково / Barwenkowo ) is a city in the Ukraine in Kharkiv Oblast with about 9000 inhabitants (2015). It is the center of Barwinkowe Rajon in the southern part of the oblast.

Barwinkowe is located 132 kilometers southeast of Kharkiv on the Suchyj Torez river .

history

The place was founded in the 17th century by the Cossack leader Ivan Barwinok and named after him, in 1938 the place was granted city rights. With the abolition of serfdom and the connection to the railroad in 1869, the place boomed. The first steam mill was built in the village by 1894 at the latest and the settlement began to industrialize rapidly. Before the First World War , 24,000 people lived in Barwinkowe, there was a trade school, several schools (including a German school) and two Orthodox churches. During the Second World War , the place suffered greatly from the acts of war, it was one of the scenes of the Battle of Kharkov .
