Tschuhujiw ( Ukrainian Чугуїв ; Russian Чугуев Tschugujew ) is a city in the eastern Ukrainian Oblast of Kharkiv and the seat of the Chuhuiv district . The city is a traditional garrison town on the banks of the Donets with 32,000 inhabitants (2019). In addition to the actual city, it is divided into the 2 villages Kluhyno-Bashkyriwka ( Клугино-Башкирівка ) and Wassyliw Chutir ( Василів Хутір ) (until 2016 Соцзмагання Sozsmahannja ).

The Kharkiv – Balashov railway line runs south of the village .

Tschuhujiw was first mentioned as a settlement in 1627. In the middle of the 17th century the city became a garrison. In 1780 Tschuhujiw was granted city rights. In the 19th century, the city was the administrative center of a Ujesd in the Kharkov governorate . In the period between the Russian Civil War and the Great Patriotic War , the Red Army ran an artillery school in the city; after the Second World War , the Soviet Union Air Force built an important air base in the city, which is now used by the Ukrainian Air Force , among other things for testing purposes new weapon systems.

Chuhuiv is the only city in the Oblast whose population did not decline in the first ten years after the end of the USSR , but has been falling steadily since 2002. Over 80% of its residents are ethnic Russians .
