Sergei Alexandrowitsch Wolkow ( Russian Сергей Алекса́ндрович Во́лков , scientific transliteration Sergej Aleksandrovič Volkov ; born April 1, 1973 in Chugujew , Kharkov Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is a former Russian cosmonaut . He was in command of the 17th long-term crew of the International Space Station from April to October 2008.

Volkov attended the Air Force Military College in Tambov , which he graduated in 1995.

Sergei Volkov was selected as a cosmonaut on July 28, 1997. He completed his basic training as a cosmonaut by November 1999. His first assignment for a space flight was when he was nominated for the Soyuz TMA-8 replacement team . He was selected to be the commander for ISS Expedition 17 . On April 8, 2008, he took off with Soyuz TMA-12 for the International Space Station , landing on October 24, 2008.

In October 2009 he was nominated for another long-term stay on board the ISS. He worked as a flight engineer on Expeditions 28 and 29 from June to November 2011 on board the ISS. For the maiden flight of the new Soyuz Soyuz TMA-01M in October 2010, Volkov was nominated as a substitute commander.

Volkov made its third space flight on September 2, 2015. As commander of the Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft , he started for the ISS together with the Dane Andreas Mogensen and the Kazakhs Aidyn Aimbetow . While Mogensen and Aimbetow returned to Earth after a short time with Soyuz TMA-16M , Volkov remained as a flight engineer for ISS expeditions 45 and 46 . The return took place on March 2, 2016, together with Mikhail Kornijenko and Scott Kelly , who had spent almost a year on the ISS. With 547 days in space, Volkov ranks 12th among the most experienced space travelers.

Sergei Volkov is the son of cosmonaut Alexander Volkov . He is married and has one child.
