Andreas Enevold Mogensen (born November 2, 1976 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish engineer and a spaceman from the European Space Agency ESA . He was the first Dane in space .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1995, Mogensen studied aerospace engineering at Imperial College London , which he completed in 1999 with a master's degree. In 2003 he began his PhD studies at the University of Texas at Austin and in 2007 he received his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering.

During his studies he worked as a research assistant at the Center for Spatial Research and did his doctoral thesis on "Real-time navigation for the approach to Mars using Mars as a transmitter network." His research focused on precise navigation during the final approach of a satellite to Mars Exploitation of the Doppler effect when transmitting and receiving radio waves between the satellite and Mars.

On May 20, 2009, ESA presented Andreas Mogensen, along with five others, as a new space pilot for the European Astronaut Corps. He completed his basic training as an astronaut on November 22, 2010.

His first space flight began on September 2, 2015 and ended on September 12, 2015. He was part of the team that carried out a spacecraft swap at the ISS : the outward flight was with Soyuz TMA-18M , the return flight after ten days with Soyuz TMA-16M . Andreas Mogensen's mission was called Iriss , a combination of the name of the Greek goddess " Iris " and the name "ISS".

Scientific career

Between 1999 and 2003 Mogensen worked in the research and development department of Vestas Wind Systems in Denmark and in the oil industry in the Congo.

After completing his doctorate, Mogensen came to EADS Astrium in Friedrichshafen via HE Space Operations, a personnel service provider for space experts, and worked as an engineer for attitude and path control as well as for steering, navigation and control in the ESA project SWARM .

Mogensen is currently a research fellow at the University of Surrey Space Center, specializing in precision guidance, navigation and control for pinpoint landings on lunar and Mars missions.
