Smijiw ( Ukrainian Зміїв ; Russian Змиёв Smijow ) is a city in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of the Raion of the same name in Kharkiv Oblast with about 15,000 inhabitants (2017).

From 1976 to 1990 the city was called Gottwald (Ukrainian Готвальд Hotwald ) after the Czechoslovak communist politician Klement Gottwald .

Zmiiv located on the banks of the Seversky Donets , 40 km southeast of Oblastzentrums Kharkiv is located in a station on the railway line Kharkiv Horlivka , the railway Dnipropetrovsk-Zmiiv ends here.

In addition to Smijiw, the township also includes the settlement Vyrischalnyj (Ukrainian Вирішальний ) with about 750 inhabitants.

history

The first written mention of the village comes from the 12th century. In the following centuries the place was destroyed several times by Tatars . In 1797 Smiyiv received city status. In the 19th century, the city was the administrative center of Ujesd Smiyivk in the Kharkov governorate and in 1923 the city became the district center of the newly established Smiyiv Rajon. On October 22, 1941, the city was occupied by the Wehrmacht . On December 22nd, 1948 the city status of Smiyiv was renewed.
