Nowa Wodolaha ( Ukrainian Нова Водолага ; Russian Новая Водолага Nowaja Wodolaga ) is an urban-type settlement in eastern Ukraine and the administrative center of the raion of the same name in Kharkiv Oblast with 11,000 inhabitants (2015).

Nowa Wodolaha is located on the banks of the 34 km long Vilchuwatka (Ukrainian Вільхуватка ), which belongs to the river system of the Siversky Donets , 53 km southwest of the Oblast center Kharkiv and 40 km south of Lyubotyn .

In addition to Nowa Wodolaha, the village of Novoseliwka (Ukrainian Новоселівка ) with about 2800 inhabitants belongs to the settlement council .

history

The official founding year of today's Nowa Wodolaha is 1675, when a fortress was built here. The name comes from the Turkic language "адалага", which means "master of clean water" and goes back to a settlement that was first mentioned in 1572. In 1923 the village became the administrative center of the newly established Rajons and in 1938 it received urban-type settlement status. On October 19, 1941, the settlement was captured by Wehrmacht troops. It was liberated by the regular Soviet troops on September 14, 1943.

Founded in 1923 and administered from Nowa Wodolaha, Nowa Wodolaha Rajon has an area of ​​1182.74 km² and a population of about 34,200 inhabitants. The population density of the Rajons is 29 inhabitants per km².
