history

The name of the later community is first mentioned in 1152 as Gondono . But as early as 1104, the noble Longobard Wido von Samarate had a church consecrated to St. Nicholas built or rebuilt and donated it to the Benedictine monastery of San Giorgio in the district of Quartino. The church later fell apart and the parish church became San Giovanni Battista, the hospital church rebuilt in the 16th century. The origin and location of a hospital of the Order of St. John mentioned in 1219 are controversial. In 1497 the Duke of Milan, Ludovico il Moro , proposed Contone to the re-formed County of Angera . Contone later became a commander of the Order of Malta, whose goods were transferred to the hospital in Lugano in the 16th century and to the Antognini family of Bellinzona in 1811 . The confederates allow Contone 1731–1741 and 1788–1798 to levy a duty to maintain the road.

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities on the southern shore of Lake Maggiore to form the new municipality of Gambarogno was approved by the voters of the municipalities of Caviano , Contone, Gerra (Gambarogno) , Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno) . Only San Nazzaro was mostly against it. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned. After the complaint was rejected, the merger took effect on April 25, 2010.
