history

The name Sancto Abundio can be found for the first time in a document from 1192. The church was first mentioned in 1364 with the patronage of Saints Abbondio and Andreas. In 1558 the place separated ecclesiastically and administratively from Vira ; since then the village has been called Sant'Abbondio. In 1774 Gerra and in 1850 Caviano broke away from Sant'Abbondio.

On November 25, 2007, the voters from the municipalities of Caviano, Contone , Gerra (Gambarogno), Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno) approved the merger of the nine municipalities on the southern shore of Lake Langensee to form the municipality of Gambarogno. Only San Nazzaro was mostly against it. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned. After the complaint was rejected, the merger came into effect on April 25, 2010.
