The village is at an altitude of 203  m above sea level. M. on the left bank of the Langensee , on the Cadenazzo – Luino railway line of the Swiss Federal Railways , at the foot of Monte Gambarogno ( 1734  m above sea level  ).

history

The village is first mentioned in 1258 as sancto Nazario . In the hamlets of Vairano and Massina, burials dating back to the Bronze  (?) And Roman times as well as Roman clay pots and coins were found. In the district of Taverna there was a tower that was demolished in the 19th century and which Friedrich Barbarossa is said to have given to the Orelli family in 1186 and which was used to control trade. In the 13th century the meetings of the neighborhood Gambarogno took place in Taverna, with which San Nazzaro had replaced Vira as their center. In 1487 it became the seat of a Podestà and a court. It was constituted as an independent parish in 1558.

The later municipality was created in 1930 from the merger of the former municipalities of Vairano and Casenzano . Today San Nazzaro is an important tourist destination .

On November 25, 2007, San Nazzaro was the only municipality in Gambarogno to reject the merger with Caviano , Contone , Gerra (Gambarogno) , Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno). An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned. After the complaint was rejected, the merger of all nine municipalities came into effect on April 25, 2010.
