Gambarogno , in Lombard local dialect Gambarögn, is a municipality in the county gambarogno , district of Locarno , in the Swiss canton of Ticino .
geography
The municipality covers the entire left bank of the Langensee from the Magadino plain to the Italian border and from the lake (193 m above sea level) to the summit of Monte Tamaro (1960 m above sea level).
history
The municipality of Gambarogno was created on April 25, 2010 through the merger of the municipalities of the Gambarogno County, namely Caviano , Contone , Gerra (Gambarogno) , Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , San Nazzaro , Sant'Abbondio and Vira .
The merger was approved on November 25, 2007 by the voters of eight municipalities, with a majority of 66% to 84%. Only San Nazzaro spoke out against the consolidation of municipalities with 60% no votes. On June 23, 2008, the canton parliament decided to merge all nine municipalities, as stipulated by law under certain conditions - a departure from San Nazzaro would have split the new municipality in two. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against this parliamentary decision . Since this was rejected, the way to the church merger was free.

Urban sprawl
The municipality of Gambarogno is an example of the large-scale urban sprawl that is common around Swiss lakes. In contrast to the opposite agglomeration of Locarno, the municipality of Gambarogno is not an urban area in which high settlement pressure would be expected, but rather a rural area with a low population density. What is striking about the municipality of Gambarogno is that the urban sprawl has nevertheless led to an uncontrolled merging of places that are more than three kilometers apart, for example the stretch from Gerra to Dirinella. The lakeshore from Magadino to San Nazzaro is also built over with widely scattered houses. The urban sprawl in Gambarogno is not limited to the lake shore; the villages above Lake Maggiore have also largely grown together. The only former municipality that is hardly affected by urban sprawl is the mountain village of Indemini.
