Caviano , in the Lombard local dialect Caviagn [kaˈvjaŋ] , is a district of the municipality Gambarogno in the district of the same name , district Locarno , in the Swiss canton of Ticino . It formed an independent political community until April 24, 2010 .

geography

Caviano is located on the Riviera del Gambarogno, the steep east coast of the Langensee , on the Swiss-Italian border, 274 m above sea level. M. The former municipality consists of the districts Caviano, Ranzo, Scaiano, Dirinella (with the border station to Italy) and Monti di Caviano.

history

The village is first attested to in 1258 as Caviliano . Caviano originally belonged to the parish of Locarno , then to Sant'Abbondio . In 1850 it became its own parish.

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities on the south bank of Lake Maggiore to form the new municipality of Gambarogno was approved by the voters of the municipalities of Caviano, Contone , Gerra (Gambarogno) , Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno) ; only San Nazzaro was against it by a majority. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned. After the complaint was rejected, the merger took effect on April 25, 2010.
