geography

The village is located on the eastern bank of the Langensee , on the Cadenazzo – Luino railway line of the Swiss Federal Railways . It consists of the groups Riva and Scimiana on the lake shore (almost 200 m above sea level) and Ronco (290 m above sea level) and Casenzano (335 m above sea level) on the slope above. The Monti di Gerra are located at around 800 meters.

history

In the 16th century the localities of Ronco de Martignoni, Ronco di Sopra and Scimiana merged to form one municipality. In 1744 the parish church, consecrated to Saints Rochus and Saint Sebastian, was built.

On November 25, 2007, the merger of the municipalities on the south bank of the Langensee to the new municipality of Gambarogno was approved by the voters of the municipalities: Caviano , Contone , Gerra (Gambarogno), Indemini , Magadino , Piazzogna , Sant'Abbondio and Vira (Gambarogno) . Only San Nazzaro was mostly against it. An appeal was lodged with the Federal Supreme Court against the decision of the Ticino Grand Council to carry out the merger as planned . After the complaint was rejected, the merger took effect on April 25, 2010.

coat of arms

Blazon

Red with a golden (yellow) shield head , inside a red-tongued and armored black eagle. Below is a gold crossbow

It is a takeover of the coat of arms of the Balestra family in honor of Serafino Balestra (1831–1886).

The head of the shield is called capo dell'imperio in Italian heraldry and marked the partisans of the emperor ( Waiblinger , i.e. Staufer ) in contrast to the supporters of the papal party (Welfen), whose party mark was the capo d'Angio ( Anjou ).
