Joyce Stewart

Joyce Stewart MBE (born July 25, 1936 in West Grimstead near Salisbury , England, † January 7, 2011 ) was a British botanist. Her research focus was the orchids of East Africa and South Africa . Your botanical author abbreviation is " J.Stewart ".

Life

Joyce Stewart was born Joyce Tucker in West Grimstead. From 1954 to 1957 she studied at the University of Reading , from which she graduated with a bachelor 's degree. She completed her studies at King's College London from 1957 to 1958 with a master’s degree. Between 1958 and 1960 she taught in Switzerland. From 1963 to 1964 she was a field officer in the Department of Veterinary Services in Kenya . From 1965 to 1966 she worked as a research officer at the East African Herbarium in Nairobi . In March 1971 she moved to South Africa with her husband, where she joined the Natal Parks Department. In 1973 she became an employee in the botany department of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg , where she received her teaching diploma in 1974. In 1975 she was appointed university lecturer.

Joyce Stewart wrote over 100 scientific and popular science articles on orchids, especially the taxa from Kenya and KwaZulu-Natal and tissue cultures of orchids.

Awards

For her services to horticultural science and botanical education, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2003 .
