Putian ( Chinese  莆田 市 , Pinyin Pútián Shì ) is a district-free city in the Chinese province of Fujian . It is located on the Taiwan Strait between Fuzhou and Xiamen .

The Putians administrative area has an area of ​​4,119 km² and a population of 2.78 million (end of 2010). 1.11 million people live in the actual urban settlement area of ​​Putian (2010 census).

Administrative structure

At the district level, Putian is made up of four city ​​districts and one district. These are:

  • Chengxiang city ​​district (城厢 区), 502 km², 360,000 inhabitants, center, seat of the city government;
  • Hanjiang District (涵江 区), 790 km², 420,000 inhabitants;
  • Licheng District (荔城区), 293 km², 460,000 inhabitants;
  • Xiuyu District (秀屿 区), 699 km², 790,000 inhabitants;
  • Xianyou County (仙游 县), 1,835 km², 1.01 million inhabitants, administrative center: Licheng Street District (鲤城 街道).

The port in Meizhou Bay is up to 30 meters deep and accessible for ships up to 50,000 GRT , and at high tide for ships up to 100,000 GRT . Despite its location on the coast, Putian is one of the poorest cities in Fujian Province.

tourism

Meizhou Island, part of the Xiuyu district in Meizhou Bay, home of the sea goddess Matsu , is to be developed into a tourism center for visitors from Hong Kong and Taiwan . Another tourist attraction is the Jiuli Hu ("nine carp lake").
