Hans Marti (architect)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Marti (born July 11, 1913 in Berlin ; † December 20, 1993 ) was a Swiss architect and planner . He has had a decisive influence on spatial and regional planning in Switzerland since the Second World War.

Life

Hans Marti was born on as the son of a Swiss businessman and a German teacher. He attended primary school in Rio de Janeiro , from 1921 in Brugg and later in Kaltbrunn , then the grammar school in the city of Zurich .

From 1931 to 1936 Hans Marti studied architecture at the ETH Zurich with Friedrich Hess , Wiliam Dunkel and Hans Bernoulli . He graduated from Otto Rudolf Salvisberg . He then worked as an architect for three years and designed the country inn for the State Exhibition (Landi) in 1939 . After studying mathematics for two semesters again at the ETH, he worked 1941–1943 on the construction of the fortress on the Grimsel . Hans Marti died in 1993.

Spatial planning

planning

From 1943 to 1946 Marti worked in the central office for national planning of the Swiss Association for National Planning (VLP) and thus the institution that de facto introduced national planning in Switzerland . He also continued this pioneering work as an independent planner. Until the end of his activity, he was responsible for around 14 regional planning and over 80 local planning, town planning and building regulations, including those of Zofingen , Aarau , Brugg , Chur , Uster , Winterthur and Zurzach . In addition, he succeeded in implementing more local motorway routes in Murten (further away from the old town), Faido (tunnel instead of through-town traffic), Bellinzona (without demolishing the city wall). As an advisor to the political authorities at the time, Marti managed to preserve the village center of Muttenz , for which this community was awarded the Wakker Prize in 1983 .

Hans Marti advocated improvements in building law and "a comprehensive view", such as the replacement of traditional regulations such as building lines, eaves height and boundary distance by the introduction of building and utilization figures. These allow a freer sculptural design of the settlements with the inclusion of vertical accents and the recess of generous green areas. This fundamental commitment, also inspired by the writings of a Camillo Sitte , continued in the work of the association. Marti was a founding member of the Federation of Swiss Planners (BSP) and was involved in the spatial planning and environmental protection department of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects (SIA), which later appointed him honorary president. The BSP and the Swiss Homeland Security recognized Marti's commitment by making him an honorary member.

Publications

In addition to working in his own office, Marti was also the editor of the Schweizerische Bauzeitung from 1949 , a task that he only gave up in 1962 when he became a delegate for urban planning on behalf of the Zurich city council . Jakob Zweifel calls the time under Marti "one of the happiest" of the Bauzeitung . Numerous articles in the magazine Plan and in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and many lectures show his educational side.
