Metatarsalgia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Metatarsalgia (from the Greek metatarsus "metatarsus" and algos "pain") is the collective medical term for pain that often occurs in the metatarsus , as far as the second to fifth ray (toes and associated metatarsal bones ) is affected. The diseases of the first ray are listed separately.

In the differential diagnosis, a distinction must be made between primary metatarsalgias with a localized cause in the metatarsal and secondary metatarsalgias in systemic diseases (e.g. rheumatism , gout , arterial circulatory disorders ).

The primary metatarsalgias can be further classified based on the affected structures:

  1. Soft tissues
    1. Nerve changes ( Morton's neuralgia )
    2. Overload of the small ligaments (ligaments)
    3. Tendonitis (tendovaginitis)
    4. Inflammation of the connective tissue plate (fasciitis) or bursa (bursitis)
    5. Soft tissue tumors ( sarcomas )
  2. bone
    1. after healed injuries (post-traumatic)
    2. Köhler's disease type II (aseptic bone necrosis)
    3. chronic periosteum inflammation
    4. Bone tumors
  3. Joints
    1. arthrosis
    2. Misalignments
    3. Overloads

The splayfoot deformity clearly dominates in practice and can trigger various disorders in bones, joints and soft tissues.
