biography

After studying at ETH Zurich , Agostino Nizzola joined the newly founded Brown, Boveri & Cie. In 1891 . BBC in Baden. He helped set up various hydropower plants.

From 1896 to 1913 he was director of Motor AG for applied electricity , later Motor-Columbus . He led this company from 1913 to 1923 as a member of the Board of Directors and from 1924 to 1942 as its Chairman. From 1936 onwards, Nizzola was also President of Aare-Tessin Ltd. for Electricity Atel, which later became Atel Holding .

Agostino Nizzola was involved in founding the Officine del Gottardo metal company in Bodio (1908) and several hydropower plants in Ticino.

With Motor AG, Nizzola set up early interconnected systems between individual hydropower plants. In 1903 he first implemented the electricity network between a high-pressure power plant and a low-pressure run-of-river power plant, the Spiez power plant built in 1897 and the new Hagneck hydropower plant , using a 16 kV high-voltage line. In 1904 the connection between the Beznau hydropower plant and the Rheinfelden power plant followed , and in 1908 the connection between Beznau and the Löntsch high-pressure power plant built by Motor with the Klöntalersee in the canton of Glarus . Löntsch and Beznau were connected by an 85 km long high-voltage line. In 1914, Motor sold the Beznau and Löntsch plant to the north-east Swiss cantons, which then formed the electricity company Nordostschweizerische Kraftwerke NOK.

In 1925, the ETH Zurich awarded Agostino Nizzola an honorary doctorate.
