Eramet is a French mining and metallurgy company. It produces nickel , manganese , nickel-based alloys and other non-ferrous alloys and high-speed steel .
history
The company Société Le Nickel (SLN) was founded in 1880 and operated several nickel mines in New Caledonia . Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the world's largest nickel producer. The mines and smelting works in Nouméa received a new co-owner in 1974 with Elf Aquitaine. In 1983 there was another change of ownership, with ERAP (Entreprise de recherches et d'activités pétrolières) now holding the majority. In 1985, the plants in New Caledonia were combined in the Société Métallurgique Le Nickel-SLN company and the Eramet-SLN company was founded as the parent company (Le Nickel-SLN and Eramet from 1992).
From 1989 the company diversified and bought the majority of shares in the Gabonese manganese mining company Compagnie Miniere de l'Ogooue SA (Comilog). The subsidiaries Kloster Speedsteel and La Commentrienne were merged in 1992 to form Erasteel , a leading company for high-speed steel.
In July 1994, 30 percent of Eramet's shares were listed on the Paris Stock Exchange . These shares came from the three shareholders ERAP , Elf Aquitaine and Imétal .
In 2000, 4% of Le Nickel-SLN was sold to the Société Territoriale Calédonienne de Participations Industrielles (STCPI), which represent the three provinces of New Caledonia . Overall, STCPI held 34% of Le Nickel-SLN in 2008.
