Historical background

Abertis was originally founded in 1967 under the name Autopistas Concesionaria Espanola SA (Acesa) ; After the acquisition of Iberpistas, Acesa merged with Áurea Concesiones de Infraestructuras (Aumar) in April 2003 and was henceforth called Abertis .

A merger with the Italian motorway operator Autostrade , which had already been planned in 2006 , was prevented after political criticism by Autostrades' shareholders.

In 2017 there were takeover bids for Abertis after initially Atlantia (formerly Autostrade), followed by the Spanish construction group ACS and its German subsidiary Hochtief , submitted competing bids. In March 2018, a joint takeover of Abertis by a consortium consisting of Atlantia, ACS and Hochtief was decided in order to avoid price-increasing bidding competition. After the takeover, Atlantia will hold 50% and one share in Abertis, 20% will be acquired by Hochtief, the remaining almost 30% by ACS. The sale was completed in October 2018.

In July 2018 Abertis sold its stake in the telecommunications infrastructure operator Cellnex Telecom (29.9% of all shares) to the Italian holding company Edizione Srl , which also owns the Benetton Group .
