saint-paul luxembourg sa is a Luxembourg publishing house in the form of a public limited company (société anonyme) based in Luxembourg- Gasperich . It goes back to the Sankt-Paulus-Gesellschaft , founded in 1887 , which at that time took over the publishing and printing of the Catholic newspaper Luxemburger Wort , the largest Luxembourg daily newspaper, created in 1848 . From 1915 the company traded as Sankt-Paulus-Druckerei and as Imprimerie Saint-Paul, abbreviated as ISP, in order to adopt the name saint-paul luxembourg in 2000 , thus taking into account the considerable expansion of the fields of activity. At this point in time, the company, which was originally characterized by craftsmanship, had risen to become one of the 20 largest employers in the country.

Although the company was already active not only as a printing company but also as a book publisher in the 19th century, and in the 20th century it continuously expanded into other business areas (such as industrial printing of third-party products, bookbinding, book retailing, advertising design, audiovisual Production, etc.), however, alongside other newspapers and magazines in the company's publishing house, the popular quality daily Luxemburger Wort remained by far the most important product at all times. That is why, pars pro toto, the company in its entirety has been and continues to be generally referred to as the word d'word in Luxembourgish vernacular . The newspaper remains the most popular and influential information medium in the Grand Duchy as well as the most important national advertising medium. That is why their political and philosophical orientation has had a very polarizing effect on the Luxembourg public for many years.

In the 21st century, saint-paul luxembourg has largely narrowed its activities to the production and distribution of the Luxemburger Wort, in print and electronic form, as well as to the publication of a few weekly newspapers. The French-language daily La Voix du Luxembourg and the free newspaper Point 24 were discontinued, but not the popular weekly magazine Télécran and the Portuguese-language weekly contacto. Sheet-fed printing and rotary printing using the heatset process (magazine printing) were abandoned, the book publisher was discontinued and the chain of bookstores closed. The newspaper's website is available in four languages ​​in order to do justice to the cosmopolitan reality of Luxembourg society.

Until 2020 the company belonged (directly and indirectly) to 100% of the Archdiocese of Luxembourg, but was then completely sold to the international media group Mediahuis NV , which mainly publishes daily newspapers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Ireland. Thanks to a small minority stake held by its asset management company Lafayette SA in Mediahuis, the Archdiocese of Luxembourg remains indirectly linked to the publisher.

The Saint Paul Society for the Dissemination of the Catholic Press was founded as an anonymous society by a notarial act of November 20, 1886, and its formation was approved by a royal-grand-ducal resolution of February 9, 1887. 86.9% of the share capital went to the printer Johann Hary, who brought his printing business with all of his printing material into the company, and his stepson Louis Held, who held the office of diocese secretary. The clergyman Jean-Baptist Fallize became the first director, but a few weeks later the Pope appointed him Apostolic Administrator for Norway. Louis Held later bequeathed the majority of the shares to the Bishop of Luxembourg because the diocese did not yet have a legal personality.

The company was created mainly to ensure the publication of the newspaper Luxemburger Wort, which had existed since 1848 and whose ownership situation had led to violent legal disputes between the editorial committee and the printer from 1879 to 1884. In its beginnings, the newspaper had been produced one after the other by different printers, from January 1885 by Mr. Hary's Sankt Paulus printing house.

In April 2020, the Archdiocese of Luxembourg sold all shares in the company to the Belgian media group Mediahuis .
