Mando Diao is a Swedish rock band and pop - band from Borlänge , founded 1999th The band has most successes in Sweden , Germany , Austria , Switzerland and Japan . Band members are Björn Dixgård , Carl-Johan Fogelklou , Jens Siverstedt , Daniel Haglund and Patrik Heikinpieti .
history
1995–2002: Before Mando Diao and early years
In the mid-1990s Björn Dixgård and the first Mando Diao keyboarder Daniel Haglund, both of whom come from Borlänge, Sweden, founded their first band, Butler . In 1996, Gustaf Norén joined them and became the second front man and guitarist. In 1999, Carl-Johan Fogelklou on bass and Samuel Giers as drummer completed the original line-up of the band.
2004 Daniel Haglund left the band because of several minor disputes; the vacant position at the keyboard has been filled with Mats Björke.
In the years after their founding, the band toured numerous clubs and bars across Sweden, creating a small fan base. In 2000, MTV presenter Tommy Gärdh, who also came from Borlänge, helped them get a record deal with EMI and took over management of the group.
2002–2005: National success
Bring 'Em In , their debut album released in September 2002, brought Mando Diao consistently good reviews and, like the first single Sheepdog , was a great national success. Catchy riffs and melodies in the style of the 1960s and 1970s as well as the distinctive voices of the two singers delighted many music fans. However, some accused the band of arrogance and overconfidence. Gustaf Norén once claimed that Bring 'Em In was better than anything from The Who , The Small Faces or The Kinks and a rounder thing than much from the Rolling Stones and The Beatles .
Following their commercial breakthrough, Mando Diao went on tours with other local rock bands such as The Hellacopters and Kent in Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. In 2003 they also became internationally known when the mobile network operator E-Plus used the song Lady for one of its commercials. For this reason, and the beginning of the boom in Sweden with musicians like The Hives , Moneybrother or The (International) Noise Conspiracy , Bring 'Em In was also released in Germany in March 2004 .
2005–2011: International attention
Initially an insider tip, the band became more and more popular among German rock fans over the course of the year. Her second album Hurricane Bar , which was released in January 2005, entered the top 30 of the album charts straight away. Due to this success, Mando Diao went on tour through Germany in 2004/2005 and played at numerous festivals, including the Hurricane , Southside , Rock am Ring , Rock im Park , MTV Campus Invasion , Taubertal Openair and the Eins Live Königstreffen . On August 13, 2005, they performed at the Sziget Festival in Budapest. On August 24, 2006, Ode to Ochrasy was launched. The album, announced by the early single Long Before Rock 'n' Roll , was praised by many print and internet magazines, including the Musikexpress , and called the Swedes' best album ever. In Germany it came to number three on the album charts.
At the end of 2006 her first DVD was released , called Down in the Past . It is a documentary about the time of Mando Diao's creation up to the present day, accompanied by numerous rare television clips, interviews, concert excerpts, backstage experiences and unpublished songs. On January 27, 2007 the band gave a concert in a hall of the NorrlandsOperan in Sweden, part of the floor collapsed and 25 fans were injured. In July 2007 they were headliners at the Live Earth concert in Hamburg, and in August 2007 at the Open Flair . On October 26, 2007, the fourth album was released with the title Never Seen the Light of Day .
The fifth album called Give Me Fire! was published on February 13, 2009; the first single from the album, Dance with Somebody , was released on January 9, 2009 and reached number 2 in the charts in Germany, and even number one in Austria, making it Mando Diao's most successful single to date. In 2009 they went to festivals like Rock am Ring and Rock im Park. They were nominated for the MTV Europe Music Award 2009 , but the award went to the Swedish singer Agnes .
On November 11, 2010, Mando Diao's MTV Unplugged concert was broadcast for the first time on Free TV, with only individual songs being shown. The accompanying album Above and Beyond was released a day later. The DVD / Blu-ray from MTV Unplugged has also been on the market since December 3, 2010.
On April 4, 2011 it was announced that the drummer Samuel Giers is no longer a member of the band.
In December 2011, Ghosts & Phantoms , a download advent calendar for the committed fan base, was published on the band's website. From December 1st to December 24th, a previously unreleased song was put online every day; the calendar features a collection of demos, attempts, and never-released songs. Due to the great echo, 22 of these songs were released as a double LP in a limited edition of 500 in January 2012.
In December 2011 a best of album was announced under the name Greatest Hits Vol. 1 . It contains 21 songs from all previous studio albums and one previously unreleased song, Christmas Could Have Been Good , and was released on January 6, 2012.
Since the unplugged tour in autumn 2011, Patrik Heikinpieti on drums and Daniel Haglund (keyboard, guitar) have been session musicians in the band.
2012–2014: Swedish album and turning away from alternative rock
On October 31, 2012, the sixth studio album Infruset was released in Sweden; It is the band's first album in their native Swedish and sets ten poems by the Swedish poet Gustaf Fröding to music on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death in 2011. The album was released on November 2, 2012 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The album premiered on October 28, 2012 as part of a live cinema event with broadcasts in cinemas and theaters in Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. This was followed by successful tours through Sweden both in winter and in summer 2013 (Folksparkturné).
In Sweden, the album immediately became a huge success, reaching number one in the charts in the first week of its release. Quadruple platinum in 2013 and a Swedish Grammis Award for the best folk song were the result. The single Strövtåg i hembygden was in the Swedish Top Ten charts for two years without a break in October 2014. The album Infruset was in the official Swedish charts for 97 weeks and ranks fourth in the list of the “best albums of all times” in Sweden.
Infruset Guld , released June 5, 2013 in Sweden, includes new songs in Swedish and studio versions.
In 2013 the band won the “Rockbjörnen”, the Swedish audience award for best live band.
The seventh studio album is called Ælita and was released on April 23, 2014 in Sweden, internationally on May 2, 2014. The first single was released on January 11, 2014 in Sweden - Black Saturday . The album turns away from the original style and allows for influences from synth rock .
In November 2014 an autumn tour followed with performances in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Austria.
On November 18, 2014, it was announced that keyboardist Mats Björke is leaving the band in order to devote himself entirely to his work in his own studio and to working with the Swedish musician and actor Thorsten Flinck . For a long time he had been replaced by Daniel Haglund at appearances.
2014–2016: Other projects and Norén's departure
On October 16, 2014, Love Last Forever , the official song for the 2015 World Ski Championships in Falun (Sweden), was presented to the public. Participating in the project is Maxida Märak , a young Swedish artist; With this song she draws attention to this minority problem in Sweden through her singing and appearances in Sámi costume. On February 18, 2015, the opening ceremony was held in Falun, where Love Last Forever was ceremoniously presented to the world public.
With their new song Leave No Trace, Mando Diao made a contribution to the Låt Östersjön Leva environmental project under the auspices of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to protect the heavily polluted Baltic Sea and its inhabitants.
In addition, Björn Dixgård and Gustaf Norén, who apparently now focus on total art, no longer just limited to music, supported the annual street art and music festival 164 festivalen of the KFUM on April 30, 2015 in Stockholm, which is primarily aimed at young people in the suburbs.
On June 3, 2015 it was announced that Gustaf Norén had separated from Mando Diao.
2017: restart with the new album Good Times
After a phase of reorientation, the new album Good Times was released on May 12, 2017 , and the first single Shake was released on April 7, 2017.
Side project Caligola
A network of various artists has existed in Stockholm under the name Caligola since the 1970s. In 2008 Björn Dixgård and Gustaf Norén joined this group. The first release of the music project was the single Sting of Battle in December 2011, the album Back to Earth on March 8, 2012. The second single Forgive Forget , released in February 2012, achieved gold status in Germany.
Trivia
The singer Gustaf Norén's two brothers, Victor and Carl Norén, played in the band Sugarplum Fairy . Viktor Norén founded the band Viktor & The Blood in 2012 , in which Samuel Giers sits on drums. Björn Dixgård's sister, Linnéa Dixgård, also plays in the Twinflower Band . Mats Björke also works as a producer for the music group Caviare Days.
