The MTV Europe Music Awards 2009 were presented on November 5, 2009 in Berlin in the O 2 World and in front of the Brandenburg Gate and took place for the second time after 1994 in Berlin and after Frankfurt am Main (2001) and Munich (2007) for the fourth time in Germany. The official nominations were announced on September 21, 2009.

As in the previous year, the show was moderated by Katy Perry . Pete Wentz accompanied the stars backstage with the camera. Tokio Hotel , Beyoncé , Green Day , Leona Lewis , Shakira , U2 , Jay-Z and the Foo Fighters performed live on the show. Laudators were Asia Argento , the Backstreet Boys , Bar Refaeli , Batista , Brody Jenner , David Guetta , David Hasselhoff , Jean Reno , Jesse Metcalfe , the Jonas Brothers , Juliette Lewis , Lil 'Kim , Matthias Schweighöfer , Miranda Cosgrove , Monica Bellucci and Wladimir Klitschko . The German MTV presenter Joko Winterscheidt and the singer Joss Stone reported live from the “red carpet”.

With three awards, Beyoncé Knowles was the big winner of the evening. Another special feature was the live appearance of U2 at first alone, at the end of the show together with Jay-Z in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
