Apulanta is a Finnish rock band that was formed in Heinola in 1991 . With 21 number one hits and ten number one albums, they are one of the most successful bands in Finland.

history

Apulanta was founded in 1991 by the two singers and guitarists Antti Lautala and Toni Wirtanen as a teenage band. The name Apulanta is Finnish and means " artificial fertilizer ". In the same year drummer Simo "Sipe" Santapukki joined the band. The group started as a punk band, but gradually evolved into alternative rock . Your first release was an EP called Mikä ihmeen Apulanta? in 1993. For a short time, Amanda Gaynor, an exchange student from the USA, was part of the band as bassist and singer. She was replaced by Tuukka Temonen and after Lautala left the band, the band consisted of Wirtanen, Santapukki and Temonen for a long time. After two more EPs, the debut album Attack of the AL People followed , all of which, however, did not get much public attention.

The first success and also the breakthrough came in October 1995 with the EP Hajonnut . In particular through the song Mitä kuuluu she came to number 2 in the Finnish single charts. The song was also included on the album Ehjä , which was released six months later and reached number 4 on the album charts. With the cover version of the song Anna mulle piiskaa by the hardcore punk band Terveet Kädet , which was number 1 in the charts for four weeks at the turn of the year 1996/97 , a series of eight number one hits in a row began in the next two years. With 19 weeks at the top, the single Teitstensä kauniin holds the record in the Finnish charts. The EP Torremolinos together with Don Huonot sold over 10,000 copies and was awarded platinum . The series ended in 2000 with the single Ei yhtään todistajaa . With number 3 it was the worst-placed single of their entire band career, all subsequent releases reached at least number 2.

Apulanta was also regularly at the top of the album charts, starting with the studio album Kolme (1997). This was followed by her first compilation album with the singles from 1993 to 1997 and then five more albums at number 1, until the second singles compilation with the releases from 1998 to 2003 missed the top position. Only the album Apulanta , which was not a domestic but a foreign release in 2002 and only entered the charts through import sales, was also not at number 1.

Reshuffle

In 2004 there was a change in personnel, but this had no effect on the success of the rock band. Bassist Tuukka Temonen got out in order to be able to devote more time to solo projects. Their last single Pudota reached number 1 again and was their second platinum single . Sami Lehtinen was also represented as an additional musician. He had been with the band for four years as a tour and studio guitarist. After Temonen's departure he became a permanent member and took over the bass.

With Pudota a series began nine No. 1 hits in a row that lasted by 2011. With Temonen, Apulanta had already received platinum twice for two studio albums. With Lehtinen, three more platinum awards were added, the most successful being the album Eikä vielä ole edes ilta , which was released in 2007 and sold over 46,000 times. In total, they sold over 500,000 albums.

The album Eikä vielä ole edes ilta was also the first for which the band received the most important Finnish music award Emma in the rock album category . After that, Kuutio and Kaikki komesta pahasta were also awarded. Despite its great success, Apulanta had been ignored for years because its label was not a member of the Finnish IFPI . It was not until 2006 that they were considered for the first time in the national DVD category and were awarded for Kesäaine , a compilation of recordings from various festival appearances . In 2011 the band was awarded the Honorary Emma for their musical performance. However, the members of Apulanta did not collect the prizes themselves as they are boycotting the event.

In June 2014 the bassist left the band again. After ten years he withdrew because he could no longer find himself in the musical direction. His place was taken by Ville Mäkinen, who had become known as a member of the Bomfunk MC’s . At the turn of the millennium he had already been involved as a studio musician on the synthesizer for the albums Plastik and Heinola 10 by Apulanta .
