SeaMonkey ( English for the brine shrimp is) one of the Mozilla Application Suite product derived free Internet application package from a web browser , email client , chat client, HTML editor , address book exists and other aid programs.
The modules of the program package share essential program parts. As a result, less storage space is used and a speed advantage is achieved. In contrast, with Mozilla's popular offshoots Firefox and Thunderbird, each program comes with its own libraries . These are then available several times in the memory.
overview
When the Mozilla Foundation announced towards the end of 2005 that it would officially discontinue the development of its Mozilla Application Suite and its support in order to devote itself primarily to the development of its Firefox web browser and the Thunderbird e-mail client , a group of software developers led the Mozilla Application Suite continued under a new name.
The official name of their project was finally given the former code name of the previous project, which originally comes from the brand name of the American brine shrimp breeding line Sea-Monkey ( Artemia nyos ), which is almost of the same name . On January 30, 2006, the first official version, 1.0, was released.
SeaMonkey 1.x offered through its roaming function the possibility to save passwords , bookmarks , cookies and other user data on a central server in order to use them from different locations. This function was no longer available in SeaMonkey 2.0 and was replaced by the Firefox Sync extension. Sync was integrated directly from SeaMonkey 2.1. The parallel use of Firefox Sync by SeaMonkey is no longer possible since the new Sync variant introduced with Firefox 29.
SeaMonkey as a product is being developed in parallel to Firefox and Thunderbird, but shares most of the code with them in the background while maintaining its own look and feel . The development cycles are also largely synchronized with the two official products.
Some extensions for Firefox and Thunderbird are not compatible with SeaMonkey, but can be converted.
Versions
SeaMonkey is also available as a portable version called "SeaMonkey, Portable Edition".
After a name dispute with the Debian project on the use conditions for the trademark of Mozilla that comes with Debian SeaMonkey package was named Iceape . Other Mozilla programs were also given new names, all starting with Ice .
history
The SeaMonkey project came into being after Mozilla announced that it would no longer continue to develop the Mozilla Application Suite , the last version of which, Mozilla Application Suite 1.7.13, was released on April 19, 2006.
