Mozilla Sunbird was a stand-alone, platform-independent personal information manager software (PIM software) from the Mozilla project . It was created as a sub-project of Mozilla Calendar , in which the Thunderbird extension Lightning was also developed. As of version 0.3a1, Sunbird uses an SQLite database for internal storage of calendar data, but also supports the iCalendar standard for saving and loading external calendars. There are further import and export filters for various other file formats.

Ultimately, the development was supposed to support both the Mozilla Firefox browser and the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail program and thus made a further contribution to a complete open-source alternative to Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook , but also to those together with macOS ( Apple ) distributed programs Apple Mail , Address Book and iCal .

The development of Sunbird as a stand-alone program was officially discontinued in spring 2010. The version Sunbird 1.0 beta1 released in April 2010 is the last official release of the Mozilla Calendar project. The official project announcement recommends using Lightning based on Thunderbird Version 3 in the future . A continuation of the development of Sunbird as a standalone application can therefore be expected outside the Mozilla project. The project name Sunbird was thus retained, contrary to what had been assumed in the meantime, until the project was terminated.

Stage of development

According to the official interpretation, Sunbird was in the development phase until the end, as an officially productive version was never published. Despite the actual degree of maturity of the software, the developers recommended only one test run. The development of the current version was severely delayed: The last version before the current version, version 0.9, appeared on September 23, 2008 and was already available in many different languages, including German. Version 1.0 was announced for the beginning of 2009, but was only released in 2010 with a delay of over a year and only as a beta version.

At the beginning of April 2009 it was announced that the calendar project will be discontinued in favor of the Thunderbird extension Lightning . With the last version Sunbird 1.0 Beta 1, the project is officially over. For the Windows platform, this version is only published by the Mozilla Foundation in the "unsigned" branch of the binary repository.
