Little Boots (* 4. May 1984 ; actually Victoria Christina Hesketh ) is an English electropop - singer and musician .

Her debut album, Hands , was released on June 8, 2009, peaking at number 5 on the UK charts and number 20 on the Irish charts. The album's first single, New in Town , became a Top 20 hit, while the second single, Remedy , produced by RedOne , reached number 6 on the UK singles chart.

Career

At the age of 16, Hesketh sang at the British talent competition Pop Idol . Then she went on a European tour with a jazz trio. She later became the front woman of the indie pop band Dead Disco , before continuing her solo career.

Little Boots (her pseudonym and nickname comes from the film Caligula ) achieved a number of breakthroughs and is an important singer, especially in England , alongside artists such as Lady Gaga , Ladyhawke , Florence + the Machine and La Roux . Especially the victory in the BBC Sound-of-2009 vote and the nomination at the BRIT Awards brought her greater reputation.

Her debut album Hands , released on June 8, 2009, rose to number five on the British album charts. Her first single, New in Town , was released in Germany on May 25, 2009. In addition to her singing, Hesketh plays the keyboard , piano , stylophone and a Japanese electronic musical instrument called Tenori-on .

biography

childhood

Hesketh was born in Blackpool , Lancashire, the daughter of a car dealer and a children's author. She has three younger brothers. Hesketh grew up between Blackpool and Fleetwood , in Thornton .

When she was five, Hesketh wanted her parents to have a piano. Her uncle eventually found a used one at a local pub . She began to play and thereby achieved a scholarship to a local music school. During this time she had to play the flute and harp and give singing lessons. At the age of 13, Hesketh wrote her first own songs.

After music school she went to the Rossall School in Fleetwood and then to Blackpool Sixth Form College. At 16 she took part in the talent show Pop Idol , but only made it to the third round, which is judged by the producers and not yet by prominent jury members. In her opinion, however, the expulsion gave her a thicker skin and the insight that her success cannot be achieved by taking shortcuts.

After Hesketh went on tour with a jazz trio for some time, she decided to continue her school education. She studied Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds and graduated with the First Class Honors Degree . This was also the time when Hesketh founded the girl band Dead Disco together with two fellow students .

Dead Disco (2005-2008)

While studying, Hesketh responded to an online ad that Lucy Catherwood and Marie France were looking for a front woman to start a band. All three shared an interest in bands like The Killers , Ladytron , Rapture and Siouxsie and the Banshees . Ultimately, in August 2005, they formed the electro / indie pop band Dead Disco. The band name was created by drawing two words from a hat of suggestions. With Catherwood on electric guitar and France as background singer and bassist, Hesketh sang and played synthesizers.

With only a few songs in his luggage, Death Disco started playing several gigs around the north of England. As one of the headliners at the live event In The City in Manchester, they eventually got enough attention to record their first songs with the help of James Ford . In April 2006, the band created their first limited release of their debut single "The Treatment" in Ford's studio in the attic of a house in London . The second single "City Place" was only released digitally.

Following the success of several sold out events and performing at the Carling Leeds Festival, the band moved to Los Angeles to record their first album with Greg Kurstin . However, this was also the time when Hesketh began to write lyrics that did not fit into the band's independent style. Hesketh decided more and more for this new style of music and eventually left Dead Disco. This also meant the end of the band. In December 2008 on the band's MySpace - blog the resolution announced. In an interview with The Times , Hesketh then spoke about her gradual separation from the band. So she always had problems separating her own interests and songs between herself and the band. Through her solo career, she can now realize herself better.

With her gradual departure from the band Dead Disco, Hesketh decided to start her own solo career. She moved back to live with her parents and initially covered various pop songs by artists such as Girls Aloud , Wham! and Miley Cyrus . She distributed this via social networks such as YouTube and Myspace. In early 2008, Hesketh started using her stage name Little Boots.

After about a year she had written enough of her own songs to create an album from them. On the production of the album Hands , she worked closely with Greg Kurstin, with whom she had already worked during her Dead Disco time. Hands was recorded in Los Angeles with Greg Kurstin and Joe Goddard . In January 2009 she finalized the album's tracklist. Meanwhile, Little Boots won the BBC Sound of 2009 vote against bands like the White Lies , Florence and the Machine and Empire of the Sun , generating further media interest for their as-yet-unfinished album.

Hands was released on June 8, 2009. A limited edition of 1,000 copies on a 12-inch record was presented two days later. The album reached number five on the UK album charts. Critics were quite positive about him in their reviews . It got a score of 70 to 100 on Metacritic .

On June 9, 2009, Hesketh's mini album Illuminations was released in the United States and Canada.
