Thornton (together with the neighboring village of Cleveleys as Thornton-Cleveleys is known) is a village in the Fylde in Lancashire , North West England and is about six kilometers north of Blackpool and three kilometers south of Fleetwood . It's in the Borough of Wyre . The two villages of Thornton and Cleveleys are connected by Victoria Road.

history

Thornton was first mentioned in the Domesday Book 1086, there under the name Torentum. This meant a large, sparsely populated area, which today also includes Cleveleys and Fleetwood. It is believed that a settlement has existed on the site since the Iron Age ; a Roman country road runs close to the village. The area remained sparsely inhabited until 1799, only then was the marshland around the village drained and agriculture could be carried out on a larger scale.

The railway station was opened in Thornton in 1865. The opening of a salt mine in nearby Burn Naze by the United Alkali Company led to a significant expansion of the village at the beginning of the 1890s; new houses and communal structures were built. Thornton became an Urban District Council in 1900 , which lasted until 1974 when Thornton was incorporated into Wyre Borough Council .

traffic

The station was originally the main stopover on the Fleetwood Branch Line of the LMS / British Rail London Midland Region Railway coming from Poulton-le-Fylde , but the station has been out of service for years. However, a citizens' initiative in Poulton is trying to fund a feasibility study to examine a restart of rail traffic to Thornton and Fleetwood.

Buildings

The Marsh Mill , a large, well-preserved tower windmill built in 1794 , is a landmark that can be seen from afar . Its construction was commissioned by Bold Hesketh, the uncle of Peter Hesketh , who later played a major role in the expansion of Fleetwood.

There are several schools in Thornton: Baines Endowed Primary School, Thornton Primary School, Stanah County Primary School , Royles Brook Primary School, and Millfield Science and Performing Arts College . There is also a small public library.
