Pop Idol is one of British television station ITV produced singing talent contest and talent show . Two seasons were produced between 2001 and 2003. The concept comes from British producer and Spice Girls creator Simon Fuller .

On February 9, 2002, Will Young won the first season finale. The final saw almost 14 million viewers - the highest number of viewers for ITV on a Saturday night in two years. From August to December 2003 the second season aired with Michelle McManus as the winner.

After the second season of Pop Idol , Simon Cowell , who appeared on the jury on both seasons of Pop Idol , decided to produce his own casting show, The X Factor , which is similarly conceived. ITV then bought this format and stopped further production of Pop Idol. After ITV's production rights to Pop Idol expired in 2006, Simon Fuller announced plans to revive its format in the UK.

The format was marketed worldwide and runs there under acquired Pop Idol - License . In Germany, the program has been broadcast under the name Deutschland sucht den Superstar on RTL since 2002. Other countries include the USA ( American Idol ), Canada ( Canadian Idol ), Australia ( Australian Idol ), the Philippines ( Philippine Idol ), Kazakhstan ( SuperStar KZ ), France ( Nouvelle Star ), India ( Indian Idol ) , Indonesia ( Indonesian Idol ) and Estonia ( Eesti otsib superstaari ). The title music and lettering are used for all productions, so that the togetherness of the internationally differently named formats is recognizable.

The winners of the national editions 2003 competed in the unique World Idol in London , won by the representative of Norway , Kurt Nilsen .
