Michelle started her career in 2003 as the winner of Pop Idol , the casting show for the British TV channel ITV . When she appeared in the Pop Idol finals on December 20, 2003 in front of an estimated 15 million television viewers, she was able to secure 10.26 million votes in televoting .
The success was all the more surprising when the British press had given her no chances before the start of the competition, given her stoutness.
Her debut single All this time hit the top of the UK charts on January 17, 2004. The album The Meaning Of Love was awarded a gold record .
Before her breakthrough, Michelle worked as an event manager at a hotel in Glasgow.
