Buraka Som Sistema is a Portuguese / Angolan Kuduro band. Kuduro is an electronic music genre of Angolan origin. The name "Kuduro" means something like "hard ass" in German. The mixture of spoken singing, electronic music and traditional African music originated in Angola in the eighties. Buraka Som Sistema have adapted the sound to European listening habits.

history

Buraka Som Sistema was founded in 2006 by João Barbosa (J-Wow / today: Branko), Rui Pité (DJ Riot), Andro Carvalho (Conductor) and Kalaf Ângelo. The band gained fame through the EA Sports soccer game FIFA 10 and Need for Speed ​​Shift, in which the song Kalemba (Wegue Wegue) can be heard. With their 2008 album Black Diamond they were on tour for two and a half years and have "proven to be an excellent live band".

Surname

The name is derived from the Buraca district of the city of Amadora in the greater Lisbon area. "Som Sistema" is Portuguese and means sound system.

Awards

In 2010 the band received the European Border Breakers Award (EBBA). At the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007 Buraka Som Sistema reached the 8th place (out of 19) in the category "New Sounds of Europe". In 2008 they won in the category "Best Portuguese Act".
