Cheek (musician)

Cheek (Jare Henrik Tiihonen)

Cheek (born December 22, 1981 in Vantaa ; actually Jare Henrik Tiihonen ) is a Finnish hip-hop musician. His YouTube videos have been viewed more than 78 million times and some have received multiple awards from Emmas .

Life

Jare Henrik Tiihonen grew up with his twin brother Jere, brother Markus and two sisters in Vantaa for the first six years of his life before moving to Lahti with mother Aino and father Heimo. There he attended the Lahti Laune lukio (high school), later he studied at the Lahti University of Applied Sciences. He successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. In 2008 he moved to Helsinki while his family still lives in Lahti today.

Jare completed the Finnish military service in the tank brigade and was awarded the military rank panssarijääkäri . He currently lives in Etu-Töölö, a district of Helsinki. In addition to his stage name Cheek, his friends also call him Jarppa. He is left-handed and spends his free time traveling and at the gym.

In the years following 2010, Jare Tiihonen was one of the highest earning musicians in Finland.

Even if Tiihonen addresses social and political issues in his texts, he counts himself as one of the values and ideas of the right wing. As a result, in 2012 he supported the presidential election campaign in Finland by supporting the candidate and now incumbent President Sauli Niinistö in his campaign. As a result, he was invited as a guest to the reception for the celebration of Finnish independence in the Presidential Palace.

In April 2012 his father died in an accident while fishing, this shaped Jare very much and he processed this loss on his eighth album Kuka muu muka .

Career

Cheek's interest in a music career began in Lahti in 1998 . In 2000 he joined the Finnish hip-hop group 5th Element , but recorded two of his own albums on the side. Human & Beast , which he produced and published himself in 2001, is still completely in English , 50/50 from the year after already contains several songs in Finnish . During his time at 5th Element, he also got his stage name Cheek, which is due to his round cheeks. In 2003 he signed a contract with the major label Sony BMG .

On May 31, 2004 his debut album Avaimet mun kulmille was released , now completely in Finnish. The album entered the Finnish charts at number 19 and the three singles from it: Avaimet mun kiesiin , Raplaulajan vapaapäivä and Avaimet mun himaan were also successful. A year later, Cheek released his second album Käännän sivuu on May 18, 2005 , on which the duet Liiku with Jonna Pirinen can be found, which made it to number 5 on the Finnish single charts. The album reached number 17 in the Finnish album charts.

The next album Kasvukipuja was released in 2007 by Alarm Entertainment , which belongs to the label Rähinä Records , which specializes in hip-hop . With the single Sun Tetytyy , recorded with Sami Saari, a song by Cheek made it to number 1 in the Finnish single charts for the first time. The following single Tuhlaajapoika , recorded with Tasis, continued this. Alarm Entertainment released the album Kuka sä oot together with Universal Music on May 21, 2008 , from which the song Liekeissä was extracted. This became a long-running hit at number 1 on the hit list of the Finnish radio station The Voice. Because of this, it was chosen as the 2008 summer hit on The Voice. The second single was Kanssa tai ilman , in which Illi was also at the microphone.

On May 13, 2009 Cheek released his fifth album Jare Henrik Tiihonen , which bears his real name as the title. It immediately entered the Finnish album charts at number 1. The first single was Jos mä oisin sä , which also made it to number 1 hit on all radio stations. The song reached gold status as Cheek's first single. With more than 20,000 copies sold, the album was also honored with this award.

At that time Cheek received two gold awards (for the album Kuka sä oot and the single Liekeissä ) at the gold record party organized by the label at the Tavastia klubi in Helsinki. The concert there was filmed and produced and published as Jare Henrik Tiihonen-DVD that same year .

At the Emma-Gaala 2010 Cheek also won the Emma for the best hip-hop album of 2009. In the same year he released his sixth studio album Jare Henrik Tiihonen 2 , which immediately entered the album charts at number 1 and went gold.

Cheek's concerts were and are played by him as well as Brädi and TS and occasionally Mikael Gabriel . From 2004 to 2008 he was supported by DJ Komet behind the turntables, whose position has been taken over by DJ Luoma since autumn 2008 .

In 2011 Jare founded his own record label Liiga Music Oy , under which he released his seventh album in 2012, called Sokka irti . The album went gold in less than three weeks and has since sold so often that it was awarded double platinum. The single of the same name "Sokka irti" made it into The Voice's 2012 official summer hit. This is the second time he has won this award.

In autumn 2012 Cheek took part in the television series Vain elämää , produced by Nelonen and based on the Swedish model. Seven well-known Finnish musicians met there and in each episode six songs by one musician were reinterpreted by the others and the recordings were then published. Cheek was at times represented in the Finnish top 20 with up to seven titles. With his version of Puhelinlangat laulaa by Katri Helena , he even reached number 1 .

In spring 2013 Cheek announced that he would play two concerts in the Helsingin jäähalli (Helsinki Ice Hall) in September 2013. Within a very short time after the announcement, both concerts were completely sold out; the first within an hour, the second in less than 20 minutes, something that has never been seen before in the career of a domestic solo artist.

On September 20, 2013, the eighth studio album Kuka muu muka was released , which reached double platinum within four days and immediately took number 1 in the album charts. Cheek did not always have the greatest successes in the album charts, but this time broke all domestic records by occupying number 1 in five places at the same time (album, independent, midprice (Sokka irti), single and download charts) . It made history in the singles charts, because 9 of the top 20 best-selling songs featured album tracks by Kuka muu muka . The first single Jossu , recorded with Jukka poika, was released in May 2013. It was part of the Kesäkumi selection of songs for 2013. Kesäkumi is an annual campaign by the Finnish Red Cross and the radio station YleX, in which several musicians took part, among others. a. Robin. The aim is to motivate young people to use condoms.

On March 7, 2014 he was one of the clearers on the Emma-Gaala. He won a total of five awards that evening (for: Best Male-Solo artist, Best-selling album of the year, Best Hip-hop album of the year, Best music video of the year Timantit on ikuisia , Public Vote-Emma)

Cheek also took part in the Live Aid ULS2017 fundraising campaign for the children's hospital in Helsinki and took part in the accompanying song “Lohtu”, alongside artists such as Lauri Ylönen, Chisu, Tuomas Holopainen, Jare Sillanpää, Jenni Vartiainen and many more. The corresponding video was published on May 9, 2014 on Youtube. The aim is to collect 3 million euros in donations by 2017 in order to finance the new construction of the Helsinki Children's Hospital. Cheek's label Liiga Music Oy also donated.

Together with Finnair, Jare realized a VIP concert on July 29, 2014 on the Airbus flight AY7417 from Helsinki, once across Finland and back. The 150 invited guests could only get their tickets through a radio competition. The flight lasted almost four hours.

On August 8, 2014 Cheek released the singles Äärirajoille and Flexaa feat. Sanni and Ville Galle as a preview of his next work, which he will tackle after his vacation.

On August 22nd and 23rd, 2014 Cheek wrote music history on a new level in Finland. In the Helsinki Olympic Stadium he gave two completely sold out concerts. After the announcement, the event, which was initially planned for August 23, 2014, was sold out within 71 minutes. 5 days later, due to the great demand, an additional date was organized for August 22, 2014, which also sold out within 35 minutes.

Since then the artist has been on a creative break. Jare was voted best dressed man of the year at the Elle Style Awards in Helsinki 2014. Despite a long break, he appeared on February 27, 2015 at Emma Gaala 2015 in Espoo, where he won Emmas as Artist of the Year - "vuoden artisti", Best music video of the year - "vuoden musa videon" and the special award "Erikois Emma “, As an honor for his Olympic Stadium concerts (attended by more than 80,000 spectators). This makes Cheek the youngest recipient of the special award that has ever existed.

In addition to various features from other rappers such as B. Mikael Gabriel ( Mitä mä teen taäl ) or Uniikki ( Lapiolla päähän ), Cheek is also part of the Herrasmiesliiga (in German: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), which consists of Brädi, TS and himself. Once a year they release a song for New Year under the title Ei Pahalla Mut Tahallaan (EPMT) , which means something like "No offense, but on purpose". These are evergreens that they re-record with Finnish rap parts. The idea here is to textually bundle the moods within the Liiga from last year. This is then put on the beat of the corresponding "classic", mixed and published.
